The cause of death for Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor has been disclosed, shedding light on her passing last year at the age of 56.
O’Connor, known for her powerful voice and outspoken activism, died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma, according to her death certificate. The document, filed last Wednesday in London by John Reynolds, O’Connor’s former husband and close friend, also noted a lower-grade respiratory tract infection.
The iconic musician was found unresponsive in her south London home on July 26, 2023. At the time, police did not consider her death suspicious. In January 2024, coroners confirmed she had died of natural causes.
O’Connor’s passing came 18 months after the death of her 17-year-old son, Shane. Following this tragedy, the singer had openly struggled with her mental health, sharing her experiences on social media and seeking hospital treatment.
Throughout her career, O’Connor was celebrated for her raw talent and fearless approach to both music and social issues. Her rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U” became a global hit, cementing her place in music history.
The news of her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and public figures alike. Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s prime minister at the time, praised her unmatched talent and worldwide appeal.
O’Connor’s family announced her passing with a brief statement, requesting privacy during their time of grief. The singer is survived by three children.
