Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Promises To File Articles Of Impeachment Against Supreme Court Justices Following Immunity Ruling

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) vowed to file impeachment articles after the Supreme Court ruled to grant presidents immunity in specific cases.

On July 1, the Supreme Court decided a 6–3 decision granting the president expansive immunity from criminal prosecution.

Ocasio-Cortez made her announcement in an X post.

“The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control,” she claimed. “Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return.”

Ocasio-Cortez did not clarify which justices she would target, leaving the public and media to speculate.

The New York representative’s criticisms are similar to those of legal scholars who slammed the Supreme Court’s decision.

The ruling grants presidents immunity for “official” actions taken during his time in office.

To impeach a federal official, any member of the House of Representatives is allowed to bring articles of impeachment against them, and then the House is required to take a vote. The official gets impeached if the House adopts the articles by a majority vote.

The U.S. Senate then holds an impeachment trial. If the official is found guilty, they will be removed from office.

The Supreme Court confirmed that Associate Justice Samuel Chase was the only Justice to get impeached in 1805.

The House impeached Chase, who the Senate then acquitted.

In October 2023, Ocasio-Cortez got into a feud on X with its owner, Elon Musk.

On October 1, 2023, the representative stated that the current wave of immigrants is “nothing” compared to the previous wave. Musk replied to her statement, arguing that she is “not that smart.”

They kept going back and forth, with Ocasio-Cortez even noting her most impressive achievements, such as her investigation of Trump, authoring a FEMA funeral assistance program and leading the U.S. Climate Corps, which created “tens of thousands of new jobs.”

Later, the businessman retracted his criticism, saying that Ocasio-Cortez was “obviously a genius.” He quickly followed up, writing, “However, have you considered, rather than ‘funeral assistance,’ that FEMA focus its funding on preventing funerals in the first place?”
