MSNBC revealed “breaking news” regarding the newest indictment of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey). Unfortunately, this happened while his daughter and MSNBC anchor, Alicia Menendez, was hosting the MSNBC show Deadline: White House.
Alicia announced this “breaking news” during the last five minutes of Deadline: White House‘s Tuesday edition. She was filling in for the show’s host, Nicole Wallace.
The senator was indicted in September 2023 on charges of bribery, and he pleaded not guilty.
Federal government officials stated that he and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, took bribes in the form of cash, gold bars and a convertible. Prosecutors accused the senator of relying on his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to further the Egyptian government’s interests.
The Department of Justice also claimed that the senator was given luxury wristwatches and Formula One tickets, which he got in exchange for having promoted the Qatari government.
While the news of Bob’s second superseding indictment broke, Alicia had already been in her first hour acting as the guest host of Deadline: White House, which is two hours long.
Alicia made it clear back in September 2023 that she was not going to report on her father’s case.
“I will not be reporting on the legal case,” Alicia said to her viewers in September 2023. “That said, my colleagues across MSNBC and NBC News, they have aggressively covered this story, and they’ll continue to do so, as they should.”
“We have to take a quick break,” Alicia stated. “And we’ll be back with some breaking news right after this.”
The video showed Menendez going to a commercial and then showed MSNBC host Ari Melber beginning to report on the new charges against the indicted senator after the commercial break.
“Hello, I’m Ari Melber with some breaking legal news,” he stated. “New Jersey United States Sen. Robert Menendez now facing new allegations in a second superseding indictment which was filed by a federal grand jury from his DOJ prosecution.”
“Those prosecutors there at the Justice Department now allege Menendez received gifts not only for allegedly helping the government have Egypt but also for helping a developer – Fred Dabies – get a multimillion-dollar investment from a company with ties to a government of Qatar,” Melber went on to say.
“Prosecutors also say Menendez introduced that same individual – Dabies – to a member of the Qatari royal family,” he added. “Sen. Menendez has pled not guilty to all previous allegations in the original indictment.”
“The developer cited in this indictment has also been charged and has also pled not guilty to those underlying allegations,” the attorney confirmed. “This is a brand new superseding indictment. We’ll actually have more on the story in the next hour. And The Beat begins after this next break.”
On November 1, 2023, the senator attended a classified briefing on Ukraine.
After being asked by a journalist working for CNN why he went to this briefing, the senator denied any impropriety, noting that he has security credentials.
Back in early December 2023, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvannia) declared on The View that he wanted Menendez expelled from the U.S. Senate.
