Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) was mocked by users on social media for hiding her face after being praised by President Donald Trump while visiting the Oval Office.

On April 9, Whitmer visited the White House with a bipartisan delegation to discuss a list of problems affecting Michigan, such as a recent ice storm, funding for an Air National Guard Base and tariffs.

The visit was a surprise given Whitmer’s contentious relationship with the president.

In August 2024, the fourth day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), Whitmer delivered a speech in which she mocked Trump’s “that woman from Michigan” comment about her during her address by calling him “That man from Mar-a-Lago.” She dismissed the president’s nickname with a confident remark, saying that “being a woman from Michigan is a badge of honor.”

During her White House visit, Trump signed executive orders before reporters.

Trump told the press he was “honored to have” her in the White House. The president also said that Whitmer has “really done an excellent job” and that she is a “very good person.”

The governor appeared to hide her face during the press conference, possibly due to embarrassment after Trump started signing executive orders on his agenda.

On April 9, Whitmer’s spokesperson said that she “was surprised that she was brought into the Oval Office during President Trump’s press conference without any notice of the subject matter.”

“Her presence is not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made at that event,” they added.

Users on X soon responded negatively to the praise that Trump offered Whitmer.

“I’m sure nothing haunts Gov. Gretchen Whitmer more than walking into the Oval Office that day – and being used as a prop by Donald Trump,” one user wrote on X. “He lives to hold court, demanding deference from political opponents. I was embarrassed for her.”

“Ladies and Gentlemen, Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan – the 10th largest state in the Union – visits our revered White House to meet with sitting @POTUS Donald J. Trump,” another wrote. “What an absolute joke this woman is.”

“Gretchen Whitmer put herself in a position to be used by Donald Trump for propaganda,” still another said in an X post. “It was so bad she tried to hide her face from the cameras. Sorry, but this degree of stupidity and political incompetence should disqualify her from any consideration for President.”
