Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon 2’ Pulled From August Release Date After Chapter 1 Bombs At Box Office

The release of Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 2 has been postponed, New Line Cinema confirmed Wednesday. The second installment of Kevin Costner’s Western epic was originally slated for an August 16 debut.

A spokesperson for New Line Cinema stated that the delay aims to “give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and MAX.” The studio expressed gratitude to exhibitors for their ongoing support as moviegoers continue to experience the film in theaters.

Territory Pictures, Costner’s production company, also issued a statement, highlighting the positive audience response to Horizon and the anticipation for its sequel. The company emphasized its commitment to creating an immersive cinematic experience and thanked fans and theater owners for their support.

Horizon follows multiple storylines during the settlement of the American West. Costner stars as horse trader Hayes Ellison, leading an ensemble cast that includes Michael Rooker, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, and Danny Huston.

Despite the enthusiasm from its creators, the first installment of Horizon: An American Saga struggled at the box office, earning only $11 million in its opening weekend. The ambitious project, largely self-financed by Costner, comes with a hefty price tag.

At a Cannes press conference in May, Costner addressed the financial risks involved, stating, “I’ll risk those homes to make my movies. I want to leave those homes to my children, but my children will have to live their own lives.”

The first Horizon film will be available for digital purchase through Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) starting July 16, while continuing its theatrical run. A streaming premiere date on Max has not yet been announced.

A new release date for Horizon 2 has not been announced yet.

The delay of Horizon 2 and the extended promotional window for the first film suggest a strategic shift in the release plan for Costner’s four-part epic. As the studio and production company work to build audience interest, the future of this Western saga remains uncertain.
