Katy Perry is facing scrutiny from Spanish authorities over the filming of her latest music video on protected sand dunes without proper authorization.
The Spanish government has launched an investigation into the production of Perry’s video for her new single “Lifetimes,” which allegedly includes scenes shot on ecologically sensitive dunes on S’Espalmador, a small uninhabited island in the Balearic archipelago.
Officials from the Balearic Islands’ environmental department claim that WeOwnTheCity, the production company responsible for the video, failed to obtain the necessary permits to film at the location. While the majority of the video was shot on the larger islands of Ibiza and Formentera, the unauthorized filming on S’Espalmador has raised concerns.
S’Espalmador, a privately owned island stretching just 1.8 miles, has been part of the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera nature park since 1980. The island’s dunes are considered the best-preserved in the area and hold significant ecological value, according to the regional government’s website.
Authorities note that while commercial filming and photography on the dunes can be permitted with proper authorization, the lack of permission in this case has prompted the investigation. However, officials clarified that the incident does not currently constitute a crime against the environment.
This controversy comes at a challenging time for the 39-year-old singer, who is attempting to stage a comeback with her upcoming seventh album, “143.” The album’s lead single, “Woman’s World,” received widespread criticism for what some perceived as an outdated approach to female empowerment.
Adding to the singer’s troubles, her decision to collaborate with producer Dr. Luke on the new album has sparked further backlash. Dr. Luke has faced accusations of abuse in the past, leading many listeners to express their disapproval of Perry’s choice to work with him.
As the investigation into the “Lifetimes” video continues, it’s unclear how this new controversy will affect Perry‘s comeback and the response to her upcoming album.
