Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman BJ Thompson suffered a medical emergency on Wednesday when he had a seizure and went into cardiac arrest during a team meeting.
The Chiefs’ medical staff immediately treated the 27-year-old rookie, and an ambulance was called to the team facility. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains unconscious but in stable condition as of Thursday.
“BJ is still unconscious at this point, but he’s stable, and vitals are good,” Chris Turnage, Thompson’s agent, told the NFL Network. “His family asks for your continued prayers.”
The Chiefs were forced to cancel all scheduled activities on Wednesday after the frightening incident involving the 2023 fifth-round draft pick out of Baylor University and Stephen F. Austin State University. Team activities are expected to resume on Thursday.
The medical scare comes amid an eventful offseason for the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Star tight end Travis Kelce has been making headlines with his high-profile romance with singer Taylor Swift. Meanwhile, kicker Harrison Butker sparked controversy last month with polarizing comments about women and the LGBTQ community during a commencement speech at Benedictine College.
Butker’s comments drew criticism from some teammates, though quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he would “judge him by the character he shows every single day.” Butker later defended his religious views, stating, “It’s a decision I’ve consciously made and one I do not regret at all.”
For now, the focus shifts to Thompson’s health as the Chiefs and NFL community await updates on the undrafted rookie’s condition following his seizure and cardiac arrest earlier this week. Additional details have not yet been provided about what may have caused the medical emergency for the 27-year-old defensive lineman.
