Last week, Donald Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., visited Greenland after his father expressed interest in gaining control of Danish territory.
The President-elect proposed buying Greenland from Denmark just last week, saying that acquiring Arctic territory is essential for U.S. growth.
On January 6, the president-elect announced that his son would travel to Greenland.
“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA,'” he wrote on Truth Social. “My son, Don Jr, and various representatives will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights. Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if and when it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it and cherish it from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
After he touched down in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, in a Trump-branded plane, Trump Jr. told a waiting crowd in the airport arrivals hall that he had been “very excited to be here.”
When asked about his plans, he said he was visiting as a tourist, had no plans to meet politicians and refused to talk about America’s interest in Greenland. He stated he was only there to “see a lot of the sights, talk to some people and have a good time.”
Later, he was pictured outside a controversial statue of Hans Egede, a Danish-Norwegian missionary viewed as a symbol of Danish colonialism.
Trump Jr.’s entourage gave out “Make Greenland Great Again” hats.
The stunts didn’t amuse senior Greenland politicians. Pipaluk Lynge, an MP from Greenland, told Politico: “No journalists were allowed to interview him. It was all staged to make it seem like we—the Greenlandic people—were MAGA and love to be a part of the USA. “
In August 2019, Trump tried convincing the Danish government to sell Greenland to America. The Danish government declared that the territory “is not for sale.”
