David Byrne, known as the front-man for the Talking Heads, will soon be leaving New York City. For the past few months, he has been performing his latest album, American Utopia, at the Hudson Theatre along with 11 other musicians. This extended stay has been just one stop on an international tour to promote the album. Alongside songs from the album, Byrne and his group of performers play a few Talking Heads hits and some deep cuts from his solo career. However, this is no ordinary concert. “We’re gonna take you on a whole journey that’s not just a bunch of songs, and you’re gonna have a party, but you’re gonna be at a different place emotionally and intellectually or whatever by the end,” Byrne told CBS. This may have to do with the location of performance – a Broadway theater is a much smaller and more intimate space than the renowned 67-year-old is used to.

Byrne’s residency and “journey” in Broadway has been very successful, both critically and commercially. The New York Stage Review gave the performance five stars, saying, “‘Life-affirming’ isn’t a term that should be thrown around casually, but it’s the first one that came to mind as I left the Hudson Theatre following a recent preview of David Byrne’s American Utopia.” The Washington Post called the show “sensational,” while Variety called Byrne a, “vital, compelling and deeply relevant artist.”
Tickets for the part-concert-part-retrospective have been selling fast. The remaining shows at the Hudson Theatre have a limited amount of seats left, with a few shows having sold out weeks in advance. Most tickets for American Utopia are well above $200, with some tickets being sold for as much as $760. The show is also ending on February 16, and will not be returning to New York for a while. If you want to see this “Once in a Lifetime” event, you may want to buy your tickets now.
