Angelina Jolie said the stress inflicted by her divorce from Brad Pitt caused her to develop Bell’s Palsy, a condition that causes facial paralysis.
“My body reacts very strongly to stress,” she told WSJ magazine. “My blood sugar goes up and down. I suddenly had Bell’s palsy six months before my divorce.”
“There’s a reason people who have been through hardship are also much more honest and much more connected, and I am more relaxed with them,” the actress said of her work as an activist. “Why do I like spending time with people who’ve survived and are refugees? They’ve confronted so much in life that it brings forward not just strength, but humanity.”
Jolie said that her six children are her best friends.
“They are the closest people to me and my life, and they’re my close friends,” she said. “We’re seven very different people, which is our strength.”
She emphasized that she still does not have much of a social life in Los Angeles since she dislikes the glare of the spotlight.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” Jolie claimed. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
The star is planning on moving to her home in Cambodia and is also hoping to spend more time there where she can heal from her illness.
“Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place,” the actress continued. “So you seek authenticity.”
Jolie recently settled her bitter lawsuit with Pitt over a French vineyard that they bought together.
