Now that a second season for And Just Like That has been officially announced, fans are still curious about how things will be developing in this revival series’ next chapter. Who will Carrie be pursuing now that Mr. Big is dead? Will she still be texting Samantha due to Kim Cattrall’s lack of involvement with the show?
Michael Patrick King, known as a writer on Sex And The City as well as director of the following two film adaptations, is the showrunner of AJLT is discussing the impact of the show’s first season and what he is most excited to explore in the next.
King said he had to take time to think about whether he could pull off another story for the second season. He said his drive for the new season became “to go deeper into the four new characters as well as even deeper into the original three,” he told Variety. “Because the first season was really about, ‘prove it!’ It was a hunch…”
He also confirmed that the season is very early in the process, with their writer’s room only going into their second week of work. “You’re in the exploration of what was, what can be. It’s the fun part, it’s the dreaming up part.” They hope to shoot this fall and air the second season by the summer of 2023.
Since they’re so early in writing, King was reluctant to disclose any details. “One of my big rules is don’t tell things until they’re real. Because then people always ask you, ‘Well, what happened to that thing where the giraffe showed up?'” He said that his main goal for the season is to make sure the full cast doesn’t seem to be on “separate runways” in the story.
He did give a couple of crumbs of knowledge for info-starved fans. He mentioned that the season begins only three weeks after season one left off. The writer also confirmed that Ivan Hernandez, who played Carrie’s love interest Franklin, will be returning for season two.
King also spoke about an ambiguous scene in the season one finale, where Carrie finally meets up with Samantha offscreen in France after the characters communicated through text for much of the season.
“Every single one of the writers has a different version of what happened during that conversation,” King cracked. His interpretation was that “they had a great night and things became resolved. Once Carrie let go of an old, old love, one of her current loves came back in.” It seems like the texts will continue into this season, though some fans surely hope that Cattrall will return to the character one day, which is unlikely.
