After Toxic Workplace Controversy, Ellen DeGeneres Planning To Quit Career After Netflix Special: ‘I Am Not Mean’
Comedian and former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has revealed plans to step away from the spotlight following her current stand-up tour and upcoming Netflix special.
During a recent performance at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa, DeGeneres fielded questions from the audience about her future plans. When asked about potential movie roles or Broadway appearances, she firmly stated, “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”
DeGeneres, 66, addressed the controversy surrounding her long-running daytime talk show, which ended in 2022 after 19 seasons amid allegations of a toxic work environment. “I got kicked out of show business for being mean,” she quipped, acknowledging the impact of the scandal on her career.
The comedian reflected on her changed perspective, admitting, “I used to say, ‘I don’t care what people say about me.’ Now I realize I said that during the height of my popularity.”
While maintaining her trademark humor, DeGeneres also addressed the accusations against her. “I can be demanding and impatient and tough,” she conceded. “I am a strong woman. I am many things, but I am not mean.”
The Emmy-winning host explained that her intent was never to be cruel, even if her actions were sometimes perceived that way. She referenced the 2020 BuzzFeed report that detailed allegations from former and current staffers, including claims of racial microaggressions and fear of retribution for raising complaints.
DeGeneres spoke about the emotional toll of the controversy, saying, “The hate went on for a long time and I would try to avoid looking at the news. The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”
The comedian’s current tour, Ellen’s Last Stand…Up, has faced some setbacks, with four upcoming show dates recently canceled without explanation. Despite these challenges, DeGeneres remains focused on completing the tour and filming her final Netflix special, set to premiere later this year.
