Universal Pictures has announced plans for a biopic based on pop icon Britney Spears‘ 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me. The studio has tapped director Jon M. Chu to helm the project, with acclaimed producer Marc Platt set to produce.

Chu, who is currently wrapping up production on the highly anticipated Wicked adaptation, will reunite with Platt for this new venture. The pair’s previous collaborations have garnered numerous accolades, including recognition from the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys.

Spears‘ memoir, which hit shelves in late 2023, quickly became a bestseller and received positive critical reception. The book offers an intimate look at the singer’s life, from her childhood in Louisiana to her breakout role on The Mickey Mouse Club and subsequent rise to pop superstardom.

The Woman in Me also delves into Spears’ struggles, including her highly publicized 13-year conservatorship and strained relationships with family members. The memoir sparked controversy with its revelations about Spears’ past relationship with fellow pop star Justin Timberlake, including a discussion of an abortion.

Following the book’s release and subsequent public reaction, Spears took to social media to address the situation. “I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book. If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry,” the singer stated.

While Spears remains a global music icon, she recently announced her retirement from performing. In January, she shared her decision to “never return” to the music industry, though she expressed interest in continuing to write songs for other artists.

The biopic project is still in its early stages, with no release date, plot details or casting information available at this time.

Spears has remained in the news for the wrong reasons in recent months. In May, paramedics were called to examine her at an L.A. hotel after she got into a screaming match with her boyfriend.
