The Bliss nightclub in D.C. went viral recently when it helped coordinate a truly strange memorial party for a local Maryland rapper Goonew who was recently killed. They have since apologized for the incident, which involved them displaying the rapper’s body on the club’s dance floor. Bliss apologized in a statement on Instagram and claimed to have no knowledge of the plan.
“Bliss was contacted by a local funeral home to rent out our venue for Goonew’s home-going celebration. Bliss was never made aware of what would transpire. We sincerely apologize to all those who may be upset or offended,” the club said. The party took place on Sunday and quickly caused a wildfire of shocked reactions online. The cover charge was as high as $40 for the party, and it was billed rather morbidly as “The Last Show.”
The 24-year-old rapper, who was born Markelle Morrow, was found with gunshot wounds on the sidewalk and tragically passed away after being rushed to the hospital. His mother, Patrice Parker Morrow, said he was shot from behind and subsequently robbed. “I feel like my son could have gone farther in his life but he always worried about his neighborhood. I miss him so much,” Parker told NBC4.
Goonew was known for his unique rap delivery that sounded soft and whispery and released his debut studio album Still Servin in 2019. Fellow rappers from the Maryland/D.C. scene have posted tributes to the late rapper, including IDK, Redveil and A$AP Ant.
