CW’s The Vampire Diaries is set to have a spinoff that will begin airing sometime in the show’s current fourth season.
The Vampire Diaries spinoff, with the working title The Originals, is going to star Joseph Morgan (Klaus). Also involved in the project is Phoebe Tonkin, who plays a werewolf on The Vampire Diaries. Julie Piec, Vampire's executive producer, will write the pilot for the new series and continue on as showrunner if it were to get picked up.
The pilot episode will follow Klaus as he “returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans—a town he helped build centuries ago—and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This new series as a whole will revolve around “The Originals,” who were described in The Vampire Diaries’ season two as the first vampires in the world. As the CW struggled last year with canceled The Secret Circle, they’re looking for this backdoor spinoff to really take off.
The pilot for The Originals will air on April 25.
