Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) said that America “is not sending their best and brightest” to represent the country in Congress.

“Sometimes you literally just can’t believe like, these people are making the decisions that are determining the government here. It’s actually scary,” he said during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

“Before the government almost shut down, I mean, it came down to a couple of hours. I was in my office, and they finally came over from the House. And they’re like, ‘Ok, well, this has to be unanimous in the Senate.’ And out of the 99 of us, if one single one of us would have said no, the whole government would have shut down,” Fetterman said.

“That’s how dangerous that is to put that kind of power in one’s hands,” he continued, “because you have some very less gifted kinds of people that are willing to shut down the government just to score points on Fox [News].”

When asked by Colbert if he believed that senators feel that they are not the “most dysfunctional part of the government” right now, given the chaos in the House, Fetterman said that it’s a “low bar” to reach.

“I just want everybody to realize just how truly dysfunctional it really is,” the lawmaker said. “And I always tell people, don’t worry, please don’t worry. It’s much worse than you think.”

Fetterman also opened up about his recent mental health struggles. He returned to the Senate in April from a leave of absence, during which he was treated for depression.

“It’s a privilege and it’s a duty to talk about this,” Fetterman explained. “I want anyone who’s listening to this, that sees this: If you are suffering from depression, please get help. Please get help, because it works.”

After Fetterman’s interview, right-wing commentators took the senator to task.

Conservative commentator C.J. Pearson said on X, “John Fetterman on Colbert: ‘America is not sending their best and brightest, you know, to Washington, D.C.’ Pot, meet kettle.”

John Fetterman, newly elected to the Senate, is a Democrat from Pennsylvania. He is a good man, intelligent and caring, who will represent us well. I am very proud of him, especially with his decision to be open and transparent about his Severe Depression and his treatment. What a great example of his honesty! No matter what he wears, Senator Fetterman is going to do the right thing for America. But now, it’s not the Senate that is causing trouble.

The problems the Republicans in the House have caused are the result of schisms within their party, leaving the House in disarray with little chance of a speedy recovery.

They refuse to accept that their guy has been indicted for 91 counts of criminal acts. They are stupidly backing Donald Trump in his quest for a second term, despite his bad decisions, coup attempt and promises to use his 2nd term to get revenge on everyone who he thinks has wronged him.

He aligns himself with dictators and fascists – Putin seems to be his special friend. It is entirely possible that some of the secret files he removed from the White House have been given to Putin in exchange for something of value, like help to throw the presidential election his way.

There can’t be significant progress in our government until the Republicans work with the Democrats on bipartisan agreements. They need to grow up and act like adults, not whining children.

We are lucky that the Senate has a Democratic majority – the Republicans can’t do to the Senate what they have done to the House of Representatives. For now, Democracy isn’t in a lot of danger, but that could easily change.

What other job can you have were you can just let things that affect a whole country almost run out, delay, get rid of a person doing a job before replacing knowing it is going to affect this country and countries we are committed to. But you think Mr Fetterman said something that the American people with half a brain haven’t already thought. Your way wrong and hopefully they remember this when they go to vote. How you don’t think of the little guy when you are playing your games in Washington. They put you in there we can take you out

John Fetterman is a good and kind man. The GOP Nazis have nothing to offer normal Americans. They, like their disgusting leader, Donald J. Trump, the criminal and traitor in chief, the rapist racist, bullies them has turned them into evil monsters who despise democracy and real people. But that’s ok Because he has money, so he’s God and they are all afraid of him, just like the German parliament was afraid of Hitler. THE GOP MAGAS ARE THE STUPID KILLERS OF DEMOCRACY AND AMERICANS. Don’t let them fool you.

John Fetterman has been an inspiring man as a politician. I am also a stroke survivor. I am still at work as an announcer, and musician. Most people in my position could not continue. Maybe I was too stubborn. John Fetterman didn’t let his medical setback stop him. His brain still works. People who do not understand him or his setbacks will say how the both of us are “lamebrains”. I wish him nothing but continued success.

I’m from Pa and I couldn’t be more ashamed who the people sent to the senate it proves people only vote for the letter behind someone’s name and that shouldn’t be. He should very proud that he got help for his mental condition this isn’t about that but some people should look in the mirror. Well I guess you get what you vote for look at all the violence in these cities the people voted the people in office who are soft on crime they look at the victim as the criminal

Check his work record before he got into government, he’s lazy, lived off his parents, and now talks like he’s better than most, plus keep a job you start and miss how much of the beginning of and still keep it, keep coddling this no working, thinks he’s better than everyone else, and most think he should not have won the election, the fix was in, Biden brown noser

John Fetterman is 100% correct. If voters continue sending Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz, Boerbert, MTG, and others to Congreess, it will only get worse. MAGAs use the term AMERICAN PEOPLE like they are working for them. They can care less about the American people. They only care about making appearances on FOX NEWS, trying to get their outlandish statements to trend on Twitter or promote their podcasts. They push out conspiracy theories, create culture war conflicts to divide Americans. Why? Because they don’t actually have to work for their constitutents, and angry voters will vote them back into office when they should vote them out of office.

America definitely did not send its best and brightest to Washington. All they are worried about is themselves and no one else. Republicans and democrats are no different if the voting public did their homework we might be in a better place. They need to put the American people first and STOP spending the working man money.

There is no better example of Mr. Fetterman’s statement than himself. A man that shows no respect for the institution by dressing as a slob and beginning unde erdepression more time then being there while drawing a salary. Respect the trust the citizens have entrusted you with an be an example to future generations. I am really concerned that my grandchildren would take you as an example of the role of a leader. Who judges us but does not wise to be judged by others.

Wendy you are delusional at best. look at his history. Bankrupted a town he became a mayor of from lies and bs and I believe he only showed up to two town meetings the whole time he was there. He was there to suck out everything out of that town like a leeches do. Second of all your fine with somebody in office that is weak mentally and physically making important and critical calls on your behalf? We see how that’s working out already with sleepy Joe, not well and Fetterman is a younger version and just as crupt. Democratic party today is not the same of old. Pure evil, dishonest,Marxist traits and tactics and they do not have Americans best interests at heart or speak for people nomore. In it for their on agenda. He’s especially shown it time and time again just actually do a little digging on him and his past and how he has gotten to where he’s at and don’t keep getting your info from out of his mouth or the media that’s asking him the hard questions. We got to to hold our leaders at a higher standard and not letting them tear our country apart with their greed and courpt ways. Both parties

I totally agree with Fetterman.I also believe that many of the Republicans who are backing Trump are 😟 afraid of him.Putin rules by fear 😨,Hitler, Mussolini, and others like them rule by fear of reprisal, but we need to assure our elected officials that we,the people will stand with them and keep our country a real democracy, free from oppression.

Fetterman is right. The Right is pushing its most fanatical ideology on the whole country. We need to do what we have to , to stop them from stepping on all our necks.
