On Wednesday, popular country musician Morgan Wallen issued an apology for using a racial slur while heavily under the influence of alcohol. Wallen first made these racist comments in January when arriving to his house in Nashville, Tennessee. It has not been made clear on where Wallen was arriving from, but the country star was with several of his friends during the incident. As a heavily intoxicated Wallen stumbled out of the car, the singer began to scream various profanities including the N word. During his drunken tirade, Wallen yelled at his friends “to take care of this p****-a** n*****.” Several neighbors recorded Wallen’s rant on video and sent it to TMZ.
This is not the first time in which Wallen has found himself at the center of a controversy. The singer had already been incarcerated in May 2020 for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. He was also temporarily banned from Saturday Night Live a week before he was slated to perform on the show after a video of him violating COVID-19 protocols surfaced.
Following Wallen’s outburst, several media companies distanced themselves from the musician. Cumulus Media removed Wallen’s music from their airplay, while all Apple Music Country’s homepage removed all photos and tracklists that related to the country singer. Wallen’s songs have also been removed from the “Top 50 Hot Country Songs” playlist on Spotify.
Following the release of the video, Wallen quickly apologized for his actions, stating, “I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.”
