Kevin Sharp, the singer who made a name for himself in country music, died Saturday at his mother’s home in Fair Oaks, Calif. He was 43.

Sharp died from “complications due to cancer,” according to his mother, Elaine Sharp. "He had a good, strong heart," she told CNN. "He's not hurting anymore."

Sharp had battled cancer as a teenager, during which time he received a number of surgeries and underwent both radiation and chemotherapy. Although the disease did not recur, he suffered complications due to his past cancer treatments.

Among his best-known country hits was his cover of Tony Rich’s “Nobody Knows” in 1997. Also on his debut album Measure of a Man was “If You Love Somebody” and “She’s Sure Taking It Well.” He went on to release two more albums, Love Is (1998) and Make a Wish (2005).

After stepping away from his music career, Sharp threw himself into motivational speaking, touring the country with a positive message. He was deeply involved with the Make-A-Wish foundation, which had provided him with hope when he battled cancer in his youth.
