President Barack Obama, during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, shed light on the incredible journey of Sgt. 1st Class Cory Remsburg, who received a much deserved standing ovation from the large audience.

Obama Honors Wounded Army Ranger In SOTU

During his 10th deployment, Remsburg, an Army Ranger, was a near-casualty of a roadside bomb. Three months after his comrades found him unconscious in the field, he finally awoke from his coma. Partially paralyzed, Remsburg eventually began the toil of daily rehab to improve his faculties.

"Slowly, steadily, with the support of caregivers like his dad Craig, and the community around him, Cory has grown stronger,” Obama said. “Day by day, he’s learned to speak again and stand again and walk again – and he’s working toward the day when he can serve his country again. 'My recovery has not been easy,' he says. 'Nothing in life that’s worth anything is easy.'"

"Cory is here tonight,” continued Obama, looking over towards the sergeant who was sitting between First Lady Michelle Obama and his father. “And like the Army he loves, like the America he serves, Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg never gives up, and he does not quit.”

Cory Remburg Receives Standing Ovation

Upon the completion of Obama’s admiring remarks, everyone in attendance at the State of the Union stood up to give Remsburg a rousing standing ovation. Remsburg, with the help of his father, stood up as well, and waved to show his gratitude.

Obama had met Remsburg prior to his ill-fated deployment while attending a D-Day anniversary event at Omaha Beach in 2009. “He walked me through the program — a strong, impressive young man, with an easy manner, sharp as a tack,” Obama revealed during his speech. “We joked around and took pictures, and I told him to stay in touch.”

During Obama’s State of the Union, pictures of the president with Remsburg throughout his recovery were posted to The White House Twitter page.
