Jodi Arias, serving a life sentence in Arizona for the 2008 murder of her former boyfriend, has found a new outlet for expression and income: selling her artwork online.
Arias, who recently turned 44, maintains an online presence through a website and Instagram account managed by her family. While her website states she’s not accepting commissions, Arias recently completed a painting of a cow after a special request. She shared on Instagram that a prison guard took particular interest in the piece’s progress.
The convicted murderer’s artwork commands significant prices. An original acrylic painting titled “Beyond the Horizon” is listed at $2,500 on her website. Prints range from $28 to $39, and a set of collectible postcards is available for $34.95.
Arias was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Travis Alexander, who was found in his Mesa home with 27 stab wounds, a slit throat, and a gunshot wound to the head. Prosecutors argued Arias acted out of jealousy when Alexander planned a trip with another woman. Despite admitting to the killing, Arias claimed self-defense.
The high-profile case, which concluded in 2013, captivated the public with its graphic details and extensive media coverage. After two juries deadlocked on the death penalty, Arias received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
While many states have laws preventing criminals from profiting from their crimes, Arias’s artwork sales do not directly relate to Alexander’s murder. The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry has acknowledged awareness of Arias’s artistic endeavors but confirmed they do not violate any regulations.
According to Arias’s website, revenue from artwork sales goes toward purchasing supplies, with 10% donated to select nonprofit organizations. The site also mentions that some proceeds will support Arias’s appeals process.
