Bradley Gillespie, 50, has been found dead. An autopsy report confirmed the cause of death is drowning.
The Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima, Ohio, reported Gillespie and one additional inmate, James Lee, missing on May 23. They escaped by hiding in a trash container, officials say.
Gillespie was serving his sentence for double homicide since 2016. Lee was imprisoned for safecracking and burglary in 2021.
Lee was caught shortly after escaping in Henderson, Kentucky, while Gillespie was able to get away. The two men had stolen a car and ended up in a chase with police and then crashed the car. Then officers chased them on foot and were able to apprehend Lee.

Local people found Gillespie’s body while on a boat in the Ohio River, 350 miles away from Lima. After locating the body it was sent for an autopsy where it was confirmed that he died from drowning. Officials are still awaiting on the toxicology reports, which may take several more weeks.
Recently three corrections officers and a major from the prison were put on paid leave. Officials are deciding whether more action needs to be taken up while their investigation of the prison continues. Additionally, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is undergoing a criminal investigation.
