Conan O’Brien Ends Hour-Long Format For Conan And Says Farewell To His Band

On Thursday, Conan O’Brien’s late-night talk show officially ended the traditional hour-long episode format and starting in January 2019, Conan will become a half-hour show.

O’Brien’s format change was previously reported back in May, but on Thursday during the last 60-minute episode, most of the time was dedicated to discussing the future of Conan.

“Trust me, it’s going to be better,” O’Brien said. “We did some testing. People were like, ‘A little less of him would be great!’”

O’Brien told his audience that the new format would allow him to spend more time on things he really loves, including “travel shows around the world, silly remote pieces,” and “interviewing brilliant, distinct people.”

Another big change that viewers can expect in January is that O’Brien will no longer be accompanied by Jimmy Vivino and the Basic Cable Band.

“Since we began this show 25 years ago, my band has been a source of joy in my life,” O’Brien said. “These remarkable musicians have given their talent, energy, enthusiasm and incredible showmanship for over 4,000 hours.”

O’Brien added, “I’ve looked at all the shows going back to the 1950s, and I can say this with confidence: I’ve been graced with the most versatile, loyal and joyously effervescent band in the history of television. To put it very simply, I love these guys.” O’Brien then continued his heartfelt farewell to his the Basic Cable Band by dedicating the final two segments of the show to the band, who performed two songs, including one with O’Brien.

On November 28 at 10/9c, TBS will also air the primetime special Conan Without Borders: Japan. In the meantime, O’Brien is set to launch a new podcast called Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. He will also be going on an 18-city tour starting in November, and he has also confirmed the 2019 launch of new website “Conan 25,” which will feature thousands of digitally remastered episodes of Late Night, The Tonight Show and Conan.
