Community has been rescued from cancellation once again, this time by Yahoo, which will produce a 13-episode sixth season.

Community Officially Granted Sixth Season

Yahoo announced the exciting news Monday evening. Yahoo and Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind Community, promised fans that the sixth season would feature the return of creator Dan Harmon and cast members Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong.

“I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, BangBus!” Dan Harmon said in a statement.

McHale, who stars as former lawyer and resident cool guy, Jeff, also released a statement, saying, “’The reports of our cancellation have been greatly exaggerated’…. #SixSeasonsAndAMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f—king fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”

Community, NBC’s off-beat, half-hour comedy, has been on the brink of cancellation for years, and was finally given the axe by the network in May. Following it’s cancellation, Community fans took to Twitter to campaign for it’s revival with the hashtag #SixSeasonsAndAMovie – a battle cry that originated in early seasons of the show by the character Abed. Before long, rumors that Community would live on as a web series, courtesy of the streaming site, Hulu, soon emerged. And now, the rumors have officially become a reality, with the main cast returning for another season.

While most regular cast members have commented on the news via Twitter, Community star Donald Glover has remained silent on the news of the pick up. Glover left the show in the beginning of season 5 to focus on his rapping career – Childish Gambino is his stage name – and fans had been hoping he would reprise his role as Troy Barnes if and when a sixth season was made. Harmon, himself, told fans at PaleyFest in March that he would do everything in his power to get Glover back on the show in a hypothetical sixth season.

#SixSeasonsAndAMovie

According to Sony Pictures Television president of programing and production Zack Van Amburg, Yahoo approached them with an interest in giving the show a sixth season – the company recently announced it would be entering into the world of original programming.

“They [Yahoo] really were beyond supportive with understanding the production demands of a sixth-year show. They are fully supporting it in their deal and beyond; it’s pretty historic,” Van Amburg told The Hollywood Reporter.

As for how the new Yahoo deal affects the chances of a Community movie, as #SixSeasonsAndAMovie demands, Van Amburg teased fans that the studio has spoken about the possibility of a movie. When asked about the possibility of a season seven, Van Amburg was quick to cite the “AndAMovie.”

“I don’t know, let’s see how our movie does! Isn’t that our plan? There’s no way we’re not making the movie now! I think once we make the movie, let’s look up and decide how much more Community the world wants… I’d be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it. It’s early, but it’s completely in our thought process,” Van Amburg said.

The sixth season of Community is set to premiere in the fall on Yahoo.
