Channel 4, the U.K. network where comedian Russell Brand’s career skyrocketed, has launched an internal investigation after Brand was accused of rape, sexual abuse and emotional abuse by five women between 2006 and 2013. The allegations were part of a report published by Channel 4 and The London Sunday Times.
Both the BBC and Channel 4 have been accused of enabling Brand’s behavior, where various women who have worked with Brand said he engaged in sexual misconduct.
Brand worked with Channel 4 and the BBC in various capacities during the early to mid-2000s before embarking on a Hollywood career. Several reports were made about Brand’s behavior to the controller of BBC Radio 2, Lesley Douglas, but nothing was done.
Brand has denied the allegations, saying that he “absolutely refuted” the accusation denying any non-consensual encounters, and stating the reports are an attempt at character assassination.
