Comedian Michelle Wolf Hits Back At Donald Trump

You might remember last year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. It was a disaster. Normally, the show is a comedian making jokes about the current president. But in the last two years, Donald Trump refused to go. He became the first president since Ronald Reagan in 1981 to skip the dinner. At least Reagan was recovering from an assassination attempt.

Instead, he sent Press Secretary Sarah Sanders. She couldn’t handle the jokes either. Host Michelle Wolf,  a stand-up comic and former writer for The Daily Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers, joked that Sanders was the villain in The Handmaid’s Tale, and said, “she burns facts, and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye.”

Some got upset about the “smoky eye” comment especially, saying it was a criticism of her appearance.

After repeatedly bashing Wolf for her performance at an event he refused to attend, Trump returned to the topic after announcing that the event would now feature an author instead of a comedian.

“So-called comedian Michelle Wolf bombed so badly last year at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that this year, for the first time in decades, they will have an author instead of a comedian,” Trump tweeted. “Good first step in comeback of a dying evening and tradition! Maybe I will go?

Wolf quickly shot back, tweeting “I bet you’d be on my side if I had killed a journalist. #BeBest.” The tweet is in reference to Trump standing by Saudi Arabia’s word over U.S. Intelligence agencies in regards to the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

The #Bebest hashtag is about Melania Trump‘s anti-bullying campaign.

The dinner will take place on April 27, 2019.
