Colorado Man, Dustin Wakefield, Killed In Miami After Gunman Threatened His Baby

Dustin Wakefield, a 21-year-old Colorado native, has died after a shooting in Miami Beach.

Wakefield was shot at a restaurant in Miami Beach while he was with his wife and son. Police reported that he was attempting to shield his son, who is only one year old.

The perpetrator is suspected to be Tamarius Blair Davis. Davis, a 22-year-old from Georgia, was reportedly under the influence of drugs. “[Davis] was high on mushrooms, which made him feel empowered,” read an arrest report.

The incident reportedly took place on August 24 around 6:30 p.m. at La Cerveceria restaurant. The gunman approached the patio and shot Wakefield. Davis later revealed to police that he chose to shoot Wakefield randomly. He also assaulted a different individual just minutes before the shooting.

Davis was then videotaped dancing right after the shooting occurs.

“There was a guy sitting at a table with all his family and kids and everything,” one witness told local news. “He was right there, and the guy went there and shot the guy a few times.”

Mike Wakefield, Dustin’s uncles, provided an account of the incident to the Miami Herald. “This guy came in with a gun, waving it, saying it’s time to die. He pointed the gun at his son and Dustin said, ‘He’s only a boy,’” the victim’s uncle said. “Dustin stood up between the gunman and the baby and he shot him. He shot him multiple times on the ground.”

“He was the kindest kid. He loved his family. He loved being a dad,” said Dustin’s uncle about the 21-year-old.

Davis was apprehended in an alley close to the restaurant. He is currently being held on murder charges at the Miami-Dade County Jail.
