Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was fined $10,000 for wearing Beats by Dre headphones on Sunday.
Kaepernick sported bright pink Breast Cancer Awareness Beats by Dre headphones when he took the podium at a press conference following the 49ers win over the Kansas City Chiefs. His very public endorsement of the brand saw him fined $10,000 by the NFL, which had recently signed an exclusive agreement with Bose.
On Thursday, Kaepernick revealed that the NFL – which had just signed the deal shortly before Sunday’s game – had fined him. When asked if Beats would be paying his fine, the athlete, who has starred in a commercial for the brand, played coy.
“I’m going to let that be unanswered,” he told reporters, according to ESPN.
The league said in a statement, explaining the fine, “The NFL has longstanding policies that prohibit branded exposure on-field or during interviews unless authorized by the league.” The NFL further stated that should a player wear or use non-authorized gear, they have the option of covering up the logo.
