Cody Johns on New Single, Career, and What’s… by Uinterview

Cody Johns may have got his start on Vine, the video platform that only allowed for six seconds of footage, but he is now making videos that last considerably longer than that. In fact, Johns has just released his first single, “There You Are,” along with an accompanying music video.

Finally realizing his dream to make music, “There You Are” serves as John’s introduction into the music industry and the precursor to a fully formed project coming soon.

Johns recently spoke with uInterview about his music, his career, and what’s coming next.

Music is nothing to new to Johns. His grandfather was somewhat of a music virtuoso, and Johns was always amazed by his abilities as a child. While he has focused on acting for most of his career, the music certainly hasn’t just come out of the blue.

“The song was a long time coming. It was a lot of preparation,” Johns told uInterview exclusively. “When I decided that I was going to do this project I feel like I did not know what I was getting in to. There are so many pieces.”

And while he was thrown off guard at first, not fully comprehending how complex the process might be, he is now extremely happy with the result.

“I feel like it was a great, cool first record for me to come out with,” said Johns. “What I love about “There You Are” is that if feels like there is just one instrument driving it through out the whole song. There is a bit of catchy-ness to it and that’s what I liked about it.”

One of the biggest obstacles Johns has had to face while starting his music career is his age. Being older than a typical first-time pop artist, some may feel Johns is a bit out of touch. Instead, he appreciates his age for what it is – a few more years the wiser.

“I feel like I’m a bit of an underdog in this because I am a little bit older then a lot of artists who are just putting out there first thing. I’m really grateful that I am older now that this is happening because I feel like I’ve been able to study the game a little bit and realize what I can do that’s me, that will work, [and] that my fans will appreciate.”

Now that he’s released “There You Are,” Johns is ready for what comes next, although he doesn’t want to pigeon-hole himself.

Said Johns, “I just love the fact that in this industry now you can kind of just be a jack-of-all-trades. So I’m not confined to one sort of genre or thing that I’m doing.”

But still, for those who have greatly enjoyed his first single, there is more of that to come.

“I kind of made it a point to really focus on this music stuff and to cultivate a sound and a project and put it out there, put it out for the fans to enjoy,” Johns said.

“I really am going to be channeling this music stuff because that’s kind of what has inspired me lately and really just prepare for what’s coming up next.”

Q: How would you describe your new single? -

The song was a long time coming. It was a lot of preparation. When I decided that I was going to do this project I feel like I did not know what I was getting in to. There are so many pieces of this and this was all a learning experience to me because this is my first single. The sound is pop but it has influences of R&B in there. It's not super fast but it has a driving beat so it's mid-temp. I feel like it was a great, cool first record for me to come out with. What I love about "There You Are" is that if feels like there is just one instrument driving it through out the whole song. There is a bit of catchy-ness to it and that's what I liked about it.

Q: How would you describe your career as an artist? -

I feel like I'm a bit of an underdog in this because I am a little bit older then a lot of artists who are just putting out there first thing. I'm really grateful that I am older now that this is happening because I feel like I've been able to study the game a little bit and realize what I can do that's me, that will work, that my fans will appreciate, and I feel like it has just all come together and "There You Are" is just the first taste of what's to come. I think there will be other songs on my project that my fans will love even more than "There You Are." But "There You Are" is special to me, it has special meaning to me, and that's why I wanted to put it out first.

Q: What's next for you this summer? -

More music and more videos. I just love the fact that in this industry now you can kind of just be a jack-of-all-trades. So I'm not confined to one sort of genre or thing that I'm doing. But I kind of made it a point to really focus on this music stuff and to cultivate a sound and a project and put it out there, put it out for the fans to enjoy. So, as far as the rest of the summer goes, I really am going to be channeling this music stuff because that's kind of what has inspired me lately and really just prepare for what's coming up next – a follow up single. And who knows, in this industry you don't know how fast things will happen, you don't know how slow it will, so it's hard to really predict what I'm going to be doing the rest of the summer. But what I will tell you is that I just released my first song yesterday and I'm hoping that there are a lot of music related opportunities that come with this in the next few months.
