Coachella, the summer’s hottest music festival, kicked off in Indio, Calif., on Friday and promises to deliver nonstop musical entertainment through this weekend and the next.
Coachella 2013 runs April 12-14 and April 19-21. Headliners include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix and Blur. Other musical acts for both weekends include: Of Monsters and Men, Modest Mouse, The Stone Roses, Tegan and Sara, Baauer, 2 Chainz, Bat For Lashes, Wu-Tang Clan, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Lumineers.
Coachella, which takes place a couple of hours away from Los Angeles, has a reputation for attracting a star-studded crowd. Leonardo DiCaprio, Kristen Stewart, Paris Hilton, Miranda Kerr and of course, Lindsay Lohan, who had her stint in rehab pushed back in order to attend, have all been spotted on the festival grounds. The sold-out concert is expected to have upward of 80,000 attendees over its six days.
As is well known, recreational drug use is a popular pastime of Coachella attendees. This year, the Indio Police have provided concertgoers with “amnesty boxes” which allow them to dispose of their drugs and/ or any other impermissible items before entering the festival if they’ve thought better of it. The law enforcement officials seem to have confidence in the plan, as the “amnesty boxes” are steel drums capable of holding 50 gallons worth of illegal items.
Although Coachella is a party in and of itself, the partying doesn’t stop after the music ends at the concert site. Blur is hosting an after-party at the Palm Springs The Hard Rock Hotel. Filter magazine will host The Filter Yacht Club party on the 18th, and SPIN magazine is throwing their SPIN House at Ace Hotel party tonight, April 13.
If you can’t make it out to the 14-year-old West Coast concert, you don’t have to miss out on all the action. Coachella is offering a live stream, letting music fans catch some of the shows from afar.
