Actress Christina Ricci candidly discussed the financial hardships she has faced since her divorce that left her very “really, really broke.”
Despite her successful career, the 44-year-old star acknowledges going through periods of financial difficulty while she has supported her family. Ricci, known for her role in Yellowjackets, shared her experience of feeling financially strained and the profound impact it had on her. She expressed a determination never to experience such helplessness again and emphasized the emotional toll that a lack of financial resources can take.
Ricci previously revealed that she sold some of her luxury items, including Chanel handbags and parts of her jewelry collection to cover the costs of her 2020 divorce from ex-husband James Heerdegen. She further explained the financial and emotional challenges that often accompany difficult life events such as prolonged court battles, custody disputes and restraining orders.
In a new episode of the Let’s Be Clear With Shannen Doherty podcast, Ricci acknowledged the pressure of balancing work and family responsibilities. As a working parent, she highlighted the inherent difficulties of providing for her loved ones while also sacrificing precious time with them. Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude for her supportive husband, Mark Hampton, and stated that she is currently in a positive place.
“I’ve gone through periods as an adult where we were really, really broke,” Ricci admitted.
“You just have that thing of, ‘I don’t ever want to feel this way ever again,'” she added. “It’s like this visceral feeling. I don’t ever want to feel this helpless, because I think that’s what not having a lot of money makes you feel like. You feel very helpless.”
The discussion also delved into the impact of social media on self-esteem. Ricci admitted that exposure to negative comments and criticism can leave individuals feeling vulnerable. She shared her personal experience of dealing with an individual who consistently posts false and malicious content about her, and even targeted her children and family. Despite the hurtful nature of these attacks, she learned to ignore them and recognize the resemblance to a schoolyard mentality amplified on a larger, public platform.
Ricci further revealed her insecurities regarding her appearance at the press engagements at the Showtimes series Yellowjackets. She opened up about the challenges she faced while sharing images of herself on social media, particularly as a woman over 40.
However, Ricci emphasizes the importance of finding ways to navigate the impact of social media on one’s emotional well-being, striving to avoid being dragged down by negative influences.
