Christian Bale Refuses To Play Batman In ‘Justice League’ Film

Christian Bale has confirmed that he will not be getting back into the Batman suit for the Justice League movie, which will still feature the superhero character. Bale had previously declared that he would not do another turn as Batman unless director Christopher Nolan would also be on-board.

“Unless Chris says different, this will be the last time I’m playing Batman,” Bale told E! News two years ago when speaking about The Dark Knight Rises – the third and final film in the Bale-Nolan Batman trilogy.

A Justice League movie would feature an entirely new Batman, but it is unclear whether or not this new Batman will have had the same character trajectory audiences saw in the most recent trilogy. David Goyer, who wrote the screenplay for The Dark Knight and this summer’s Man of Steel, has reportedly admitted that the Superman movie would ideally go on to serve as a platform for a successful Justice League franchise, a notion Man of Steel director Zack Snyder thought about while working on the film.

“It would be disingenuous to say Warner Bros doesn’t hope that this would be the starting point for a shared universe. And Zack has said that Bruce Wayne exists in this universe,” Goyer told Den of Geek.

Of course, the reality of a Justice League movie depended completely on the box office success of Man of Steel. The Superman movie has already grossed over $500 million worldwide, and been greenlit for a sequel, so the question isn’t if a Justice League movie will be made, it’s when.

With the Justice League film moving from dream to reality, Bale’s involvement in the franchise has again come into question, but his answer remains the same.

“We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy,” Bale told EW.

“I have no information, no knowledge about anything… I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it,” Bale said when asked if he’d ever been involved in the development of a Justice League film.

Bale continued, adding that he looks forward to see what the next actor will do with the role of Bruce Wayne:

“It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”

As for Superman, fans shouldn’t worry about Henry Cavill hanging up the cape just yet. The actor, who’s contract reportedly included the possibility of sequels is excited about the prospect of a Justice League film, though he admits that it could be a while before it finds its way to the big screen.

Justice League could be great if done correctly…So, it won’t be right away. I hope it’s not, anyway. It may take some time of building up other movies and other characters and introducing them together in one way or another…I think it’d be great to do, but I don’t think it’s around the corner,” Cavill told ABC News.
