Christian Bale has backed out of starring in Michael Mann‘s Enzo Ferrari biopic, citing concerns over his health.
Bale was set to star in Enzo Ferrari as the titular Formula 1 driver and Ferrari automobile marque founder. He has decided to drop out of the project amid fears that he would not be able to safely gain the weight necessary to take on the part in the time left before shooting is scheduled to start, according to Deadline.
Enzo Ferrari was slated to being filming in late spring of this year. In order to stay on schedule, Mann has been aggressively seeking out a new star to fill in the role. As of yet, it’s unknown what heavyweight actors he’s in talks with.
Mann’s film is based on the Brock Yates book – Enzo Ferari, The Man, The Cars, The Races. Tony Kennedy-Martin and David Rayfiel penned the script for the movie, which will be set in 1957.
In the past, Bale has notably both gained and lost weight for roles. Most recently, Bale gained a significant amount of weight for his role as conman Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle. He had also gained a lot of muscle for The Dark Knight. Back in 2004, Bale shockingly dropped down to just 120 for The Machinist.
