Model and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen announced via social media late Wednesday night that she and her husband, singer John Legend, lost their third baby after pregnancy complications.
“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” the couple said, in a statement posted to both of their social media accounts. Attached was a picture of Teigen sitting on her hospital bed in a prayer-like position, crying.
The couple also said that they typically wait to name their kids, but had already started calling the baby Jack. “He will always be Jack to us,” their statement said. “Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”
Teigen has been open about her pregnancy struggles, breaking the usual social taboo around the topic. She mentioned that Luna and Miles, her two children, were both conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), whereas this one happened naturally and felt “eggshelly.”
Earlier this week on Sunday, about halfway through her pregnancy, Teigen began bleeding significantly from her placenta and was hospitalized. She stayed positive in the hospital, joking around with her husband and posting to social media.
On Tuesday morning, however, she tweeted that she’d had a “really scary morning.” She said, “The scramble to hear the [baby’s] heartbeat seemed like hours. I never thought I’d relief sigh so much in my liiiiife.”
Then, on Wednesday, Teigen informed the world that despite many blood transfusions, her baby was unfortunately unable to get the fluids he needed.
“Every day can’t be full of sunshine,” the couple said in their statement. “On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”
