Chris Rock Tests More Jokes About Will Smith Oscars Slap In Stand-Up Show: ‘I’m Not A Victim’

Chris Rock apparently did some more jokes about his experience getting slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars this year while in New Jersey for a comedy show. He has also referenced the event on and off in past shows, but this quote has been his most substantial yet.

With Rock taking months to process what happened and everything that has since occurred in between now and the Oscars, it’s starting to feel like these repeated references are becoming slightly old news.

Rock, who was struck in the face by Smith after making a joke about his wife Jade Pinkett-Smith’s alopecia-induced baldness, told the crowd at PNC Bank Arts Center “anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”

He apparently said later on in the set, “I’m not a victim. Yeah, that sh– hurt, motherf–er. But I shook that s– off and went to work the next day. I don’t go to the hospital for a paper cut.”

Smith resigned from the Academy in the wake of the incident and was later barred from attending the annual ceremony and any other Academy-sponsored events. He was allowed to keep his Academy Award for Best Actor that he won the same night for King Richard.

In his resignation announcement, Smith apologized to Rock and his family and also said, “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

Smith has been laying low since the slap this past March, and several projects he was involved with including Bad Boys 4 and a Netflix film Fast and Loose have since stalled after the ensuing controversy. Jada Pinkett-Smith has been continuing to produce her talk show Red Table Talk and said in an episode last month that “my deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out, and reconcile.”
