Chris Rock finally broke his silence on the slap heard around the world.
“I’m still processing what happened,” the comedian told a sold-out crowd at The Wilbur in Boston on Wednesday night in his first show since the incident.
Rock had made a joke about Will Smith‘s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith and her hair, comparing it to Demi Moore‘s shaved head in G.I. Jane at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday night, even though Pinkett Smith had recently shared that she shaved her head because she suffered from alopecia.
Pinkett Smith was visibly annoyed by the comment. Smith was first seen laughing along at the joke, but a few seconds later he walked up on stage and slapped Rock across the face.
“Oh, wow. Wow. Will Smith just smacked the s–t out of me,” Rock said at the time.
The audience laughed along thinking it might be a bit until Smith shouted from his seat, “Keep my wife’s name out your f—–g mouth.”
Smith was asked to leave, but declined and was not removed. He won the Academy Award for best actor for his performance in King Richard later in the night in which he apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees but left out Rock.
The actor issued an apology on Monday via Instagram.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be,” the statement read.
Rock’s brother said that Smith has not personally reached out to Rock.
The comedian declined to press charges.
“Except for a couple of weird things, life is pretty good right now,” Rock added later in his routine.
