In February, the SyFy Channel will debut a new series, Robot Combat League, which will pit man-made mechanical creatures against each other in hand-to-hand combat. Shadow boxers will be controlling their every move.

Hosted by WWE star Chris Jericho, 42, the show is inspired by the 2011 movie Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman. There have been other robot combat shows on television before. BBC aired Robot Wars in the late 1990’s and Comedy Central aired Battle Bots in 2000. Robot Combat League is different because these will be stronger and bigger robots, some as tall as eight-feet high. The league will have 12 teams consisting of a fighter and a robotics technician. The fights will consist of three rounds and the ultimate prize is $100,000.

SyFy may have some competition on its hands, as the Discovery Channel announced plans for a robot fighting show of their own called Robogeddon, and is being produced by James Cameron and Mark Burnett. The show is still being developed, but Robot Combat League has already finished its first season.

Robot Combat League will debut on Feb. 26 on SyFy.
