Chris Hemsworth has been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, and appeared on Tuesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live to announce his new title.

Jimmy Kimmel Announces Sexiest Man Alive

Hemsworth, best known for portraying Thor in the Marvel Universe, spoke with Jimmy Kimmel via Skype, and first appeared with a People’s Sexiest Man Alive mask, so that Kimmel could have his audience try to guess his identity. Questions ranged from “Do you drive a Lincoln?” – an audience member clearly thought it might be Matthew McConaughey – to “Are you American?” The audience finally gained some traction when one man asked if he had ever played a superhero, and then if he had a famous sibling (brother Liam Hemsworth stars in The Hunger Games). Finally, one audience member asked if his superhero wielded a hammer, allowing another to ask if it was Chris Hemsworth.

Hemsworth took off his mask as Kimmel congratulated him for being named the “Sexiest Man Alive.” “I’m most excited for the ‘alive’ portion of that statement, and the ‘sexy’ is a bonus, and I’m flattered,” Hemsworth joked. Kimmel asked Hemsworth, 31, how his younger brother, Liam, 24, was taking the news, and Hemsworth assured the late night host that his brother had been nothing but supportive of his new title. “Liam’s been good. We’ve been throwing sexy looks back and forth all week… He’s been a real team player through all this time,” Hemsworth said.

In true Kimmel fashion, the comedian tried to get Hemsworth to criticize Matt Damon – Kimmel’s frequent celebrity target – but Hemsworth turned it around, saying, “I learned everything there is about being sexy from Matt. You know, pursing the lips in the right way, squinting at the essential time… Thank you, Matt, and all the previous intelligent men, because this is based on an IQ test, not just your appearance.”

Finally, Hemsworth thanked his parents “for putting this together,” gesturing to his famous face.

According to Hemsworth, his wife, Elsa Pataky, laughed when he told her he was going to be People’s Sexiest Man Alive, telling the magazine, “My wife thought it was pretty funny, as did I, we had a good old laugh about it.” Hemsworth and Pataky have three children together, daughter India, 2 and a half, and 8-month-old twin boys Sasha and Tristan.

Hemsworth can next be seen in the new Michael Mann drama, Blackhat, in January and in Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea, which will be released in March.

People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue also features Chris Pratt, Jamie Dornan and Michael Strahan, and will hit newsstands on Friday, Nov. 21.
