Chris Dorner Shootout Yields Charred Body, Identify Yet To Be Confirmed

Authorities are waiting to confirm the death of Chris Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer who went on a killing spree in response to what he believed was wrongful termination.

Dorner, who had been on the run since Feb. 3 and killed four people (two police officers) in addition to wounding others in the process, eventually holed up in a cabin in Big Bear Lake, Calif. Dorner and police then engaged in a shootout. During the shootout the cabin burst into flames, and apparently a gunshot was heard after the explosion, ABC 7 reports.

"Investigators have located charred human remains within the debris of the burned out cabin," the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department said in a press release. "Identification will be attempted through forensic means."

Police officers in the area had been searching every car, and even enlisted the help of the California Fish and Wildlife Department, who noticed Dorner in a fleeing car. Dorner’s killing spree prompted the LAPD to offer a $1 million reward for useful tips that would lead to Dorner’s arrest, and after municipal government legislation, this total rose to $1.4 million. —Hal Sundt
