Chris Daughtry has apologized for off-the-cuff comments he made following his band Daughtry’s performance on Fox and Friends for D-Day.
Daughtry was a part of the lineup for Fox and Friends' All-American Summer Concert Series. Following the band’s set, the show’s anchor asked Daughtry if he’d sing a patriotic song in honor of D-Day, which occurred during World War II 70 years ago Friday.
"I'm off the clock," Daughtry told the host in an attempt at humor. "I'm going to watch 'y'all. This is where I'll bail."
Daughtry’s remarks sparked a Twitter firestorm that accused the American Idol alum of disrespecting the armed forces. In response, Daughtry linked to a video on Twitter in which he explains and profusely apologizes for the thoughtless joke.
"I was thrown off. I panicked. It was absolutely disrespectful," he said. "Poor choice of words, terrible judgment on my part. … I wish that I could have pulled it together."
"What I do is miniscule in comparison, and I will never live up to what they did for our country,” he went on to say. “Fortunately, our troops have never said I am off the clock when they had to do what they had to do."
In conclusion, Daughtry said, "Everyone has a moment in their life that they regret very deeply, and this is at the top of my list. It hurts my heart to know that I have disrespected the men and women fighting every day. I apologize for offending any of our troops, any of the men and women who have served past or present. I'm sorry."
