Singer Chris Cornell‘s funeral service will be held on Friday, May 26, at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Cornell, 52, died of apparent suicide on Wednesday, May 17, in his Detroit hotel room after performing a show with his band, Soundgarden.
Cornell’s body was flown from Detroit to Los Angeles on Sunday, where the singer’s wife and family live.
While the family is focused on the funeral service, they will also likely plan a public memorial service or dedication for Cornell’s many fans afterwards.
“The family is thinking about a memorial for fans, but is coping now with their loss and the funeral service,” a source close to the Cornell family told CNN.
Cornell’s wife, Vicky Cornell, believes that her husband’s suicide is closely linked to the anti-anxiety drug, Ativan, which Cornell was prescribed. He admitted to taking more than the prescribed dose the night of his death.
“When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different,” Cornell said in a statement. “When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him.”
The Cornell family’s attorney, Kirk Pasich, echoed her sentiment in a statement emailed to uInterview. “Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris—or if any substances contributed to his demise. Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions.”
As of Monday morning, the results of the toxicology tests have yet to be made available.
