Chris Christie’s Post Lap-Band Diet Still Doesn’t Include Vegetables, Coffee

Chris Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey, recently underwent Lap-Band surgery in a conscientious effort to get healthier by shedding some extra pounds. Although the governor is trying in earnest to get down to a healthier weight, he told People magazine the surgery hasn’t made him any more inclined to consume vegetables – or coffee.

Christie, who infamously tore a bite out of a donut on Letterman, confronting jokes about his weight head on, is now taking his health seriously. “I’m not nearly as interested in food as I used to be,” he told People, before reassuringly stating, “But that hasn’t all of a sudden made me a huge vegetable fan."

While Christie’s persistent aversion to vegetables doesn’t come as much of surprise, his ongoing distaste for coffee might, as he’s known for keeping long hours – especially during super storm Sandy that struck the Jersey Shore last fall. “Not a coffee or Diet Coke guy, even in law school,” Christie admitted. “I’ve never needed caffeine.”

Since announcing his decision to undergo Lap-Band surgery earlier this year, Christie has been an open book about the procedure, his diet and his health goals with the media. Why is he so willing to take questions on the personal topic? “I don’t want people to feel self-conscious about whatever challenges they have,” he said.

Some have speculated that Christie’s decision to get the stomach-trimming surgery was motivated by ambitions to run for the White House in 2016. While not denying a possible presidential bid, Christie has refuted all claims suggesting it as a reason for the surgery. He maintains that he was inspired by his family to improve his health.
