New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, 50, sat down with David Letterman, 65, on Monday for his first interview on The Late Show, and beat the host to the punch in mocking the governor's problems with his weight.
Christie good-humoredly recited one of the many jokes Letterman has told about him. "Celebrity birthday today, Chris Christie turned 50, he blew out the candles on his cake and he wished for another cake," he read deadpan.
Letterman was attempting to explain that Christie was one of many people the comedian has made fun of in years past. "I've made jokes about you – not just one or two," he began to say, but was interrupted by Christie pulling a donut out of his suit pocket – much to the delight of the audience in attendance. Letterman played along, handing Christie a napkin.
Christie has said in the past that his weight is “fair game,” but has added that his size hasn’t prevented him from doing his job. "Well, I’ve done this job pretty well," he told Barbara Walters when he was named one of the Most Fascinating People of 2012. "I think people watched me for the last number of weeks during Hurricane Sandy doing 18-hour days and getting back up the next day and still being just as effective in the job, so I don’t think that will be a problem."
