Chris Brown might be banned from entering Australia – where he’s scheduled to tour later this year – because of his 2009 domestic violence charge.
The Australian government recently sent Brown a “notice of intention to consider refusal” in regard to his request for a visa to enter the country for his tour. Immigration Minister Michaelia Cash has called upon Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to follow through with disallowing Brown to enter the country due to his questionable character.
“People need to understand if you are going to commit domestic violence and then you want to travel around the world, there are going to be countries that say to you: `You cannot come in because you are not of the character we expect in Australia,'” Cash said in a statement.
Despite the notice and Cash’s public urging, Brown still could legally be permitted to enter Australia.
“Contrary to media reports, Chris Brown’s request to enter Australia on tour has not been denied,” reads a statement from Brown’s team. “This request is currently being considered by the office of the Immigration Minister. We respect their right to review this request and have faith that a decision will be made with the full consideration of his continued personal growth, on-going philanthropic endeavors and desire to perform for his fans.
The statement added, “Since 2009, Chris Brown has visited Australia on two separate occasions and is looking forward to returning in December.”
Brown now has 28 days to present a case to convince Dutton that the 2009 domestic violence incident with then-girlfriend Rihanna is very much in his past. If he cannot win the case for a visa, Australia will join New Zealand in deeming Brown unsuitable to enter the country.
