New court documents reveal that Chris Brown has been diagnosed with bipolar II disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder while in rehab.
Brown was ordered to spend three months in a rehab facility in November 2013 after throwing a rock at his mother’s car windshield. This comes after he attended anger management rehab as part of his probation stemming from his 2009 arrest and conviction for beating his then girlfriend Rihanna. Since his 2009 arrest, the R&B singer has continuously found himself in trouble with the law, getting in fights with Drake, Frank Ocean and being accused of punching a fan in Washington D.C.
Having recently completed his 90-day stay in rehab, Brown was back in court on Feb. 28, 2014, and the rehab facility sent in a report on the troubled singer explaining his diagnosis.
“Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD,” reads the report.
The facility also states that Brown’s drug use and severe mood swings also stem from his mental illness, saying, “It is not uncommon for patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar II to use substances to self-medicate their biomedical mood swings and trauma triggers.”
In court, Judge James Brandlin said that Brown seemed to be doing well in his program and is benefitting from the diagnosis and treatment he is receiving at the facility. The judge reportedly remarked, “It is evident that [Brown] has responded well to the dual diagnosis treatment.”
The report also recommended that Brown remains under the care of a physician “in order to ensure his bipolar mental health condition remains stable.”
As a result, Judge Brandlin has ordered Brown to continue in his residential rehab program for another two months.
Brown will continue his treatment, which includes certain medications, though it does not include any recreational drugs. In fact, Brown’s last four drug tests have been negative, according to the report.
Brown appears to be a changed man and has reportedly fully embraced his rehab and court-ordered community service. Just two weeks ago, Brown posted a photo to Instagram of a “Second Chance At Loving Life Award” from 2nd Call. This community organization aims to help ex-felons and others with community service, education, counseling and more.
Though Brown remained relatively quiet during his court appearance, the report stated that Brown “would like to inform the court that he appreciates what he has learned in the rehabilitation facility, as it has allowed him to change his life for the better…He remains thankful to the court for the opportunity to find out and learn about himself, his anger issues and the type of person he wants to become, which is a man who is able to better himself and be a positive role model.”
Brown is also slowly getting back to work. He released a single, “Loyal,” featuring Lil Wayne and French Montana in December 2013, and recently posted a photo of himself in the studio on Instagram. He also teased an upcoming collaboration with singer Ariana Grande.
