Chinese model Xi Mengyao, aka Ming Xi, slipped on her outfit and fell on the runway of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Audience members and viewers alike applauded the young model’s style and grace as she smiled, fixed her headpiece, and continued with her catwalk. She was wearing a sheer white cape over silver lingerie, a look completed by a floral headpiece. It started when she tripped over her embellishment and fell to her knees. Before she walked, she shared how excited she was for the show to be taking place in her hometown, and for her family to be in the audience.
The fall quickly became the most memorable moment from the fashion show. As Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. was singing a tearjerking cover of Sara Bareilles‘s Winter Song, Xi was making her way around the runway. The 28-year-old lost her footing and went down. She smiled throughout the entire ordeal, and adjusted her headpiece like a champ before she stood back up. Fellow Angel Gizele Oliveira came from behind and helped her up to applause.
Audio played during the telecast included hot mic pick-ups from backstage: “Ming has fallen… oh my goodness,” and “Gizele’s got her.” “Happens to the best of them,” said Odom afterward. “Sometimes we fall; we get back up. Fall down seven times, get up eight.” She regained her composure until she got backstage, when she softly cried.
“Love how Ming Xi shows how to pick yourself and own a difficult moment. Great to share the stage with you at the #VSFashionShow,” Odom tweeted out after the show.
After the moment was caught on camera on Nov. 20, Xi took to Instagram to write a brief message about the mishap. “As many of you may already know, I fell during my 5th year walking at the Victoria’s Secret show yesterday. It was no doubt one of the hardest moments I have ever had to go through in my career, especially since the show was taking place in my hometown, in front of my mother’s and my people’s eyes,” she wrote. “However, the support I received from everyone yesterday was incredible and I am truly grateful to everyone who was there for me. @ed_razek Thank you for your supportive words and your continuous support throughout these 7 years. @giizeleoliveira Thank you for helping me up after the fall, it was a very selfless and loving act from you. Thank you to all the girls who rushed to comfort me at backstage after what had happened, you are all family to me. Lastly thank you to everyone who sent and left me supportive messages. I will pick myself up from where I fell, and I will keep going in order to repay all the support you all have given me!! ❤️️#vsfashionshow @victoriassecret.”
She also posted about returning to Shanghai to watch the show, and posed with Oliveira, who had helped her up earlier in the month. “In town to watch the live viewing of the #vsfs2017 show together with my VS family, and especially with this one @giizeleoliveira ❤️️😘.”
