Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, leading his team to three Super Bowl victories. Despite losing on Sunday, Reid has faced far worse with personal tragedies involving his sons, Garrett and Britt.
Reid’s eldest son, Garrett, died of a heroin overdose in 2012 at the age of 29. Despite growing up in idyllic suburban Philadelphia, Garrett struggled with addiction in his 20s, leading to multiple arrests. In 2007, he crashed his car while under the influence of heroin, seriously injuring another driver. He was sentenced to 23 months in prison and later convicted of smuggling prescription pills while incarcerated.
“I liked being the rich kid in that area and having my own high-status life,” Garrett reportedly told a probation officer. “I could go anywhere in the ‘hood. They all knew who I was. I enjoyed it. I liked being a drug dealer.”
After his release, Garrett worked as an assistant strength coach for the Eagles before his fatal overdose at the team’s training camp at Lehigh University in 2012.
Britt Reid, like his older brother, also had repeated run-ins with the law. In 2007, he was arrested the same day as Garrett in a separate incident, accused of pointing a gun at another driver. He was later convicted on drug and DUI charges.
In 2021, Britt was involved in a high-speed DUI crash near Arrowhead Stadium that left five-year-old Ariel Young in a coma. His blood alcohol level was measured at 0.113, well above the legal limit. He was sentenced to three years in prison but was released early after serving only 16 months.
Ariel’s mother, Felicia Miller, expressed her anger over Britt’s early release. “We went to court, we [were] told, you’re going to get justice,” she told ESPN. “He’s put away for a year and about three months. So we didn’t get [any] justice. It’s not enough.”
“He keeps just getting a little slap on a wrist,” she continued. “They’re going to continue to do it.”
Britt is now under house arrest until October 2025. His dad said that “his heart bleeds” for the victim of the accident.
