Cheryl Tiegs, the former Sports Illustrated model, said that the magazine was “glamorizing full-figured women” by putting Ashley Graham on the cover of this year’s swimsuit issue.
Graham was the first plus-size model to ever be put on the cover which was unveiled last month. Graham is also a body-positive campaigner. Her cover has already been widely prized as a shift in modern beauty standards.
Tiegs, however, doesn’t agree that this is a positive shift. In 1978 Time dubbed her the “All-American Model.”
“Actually I don’t like it that we’re talking about full-figured women because it’s glamorizing them because your waist should be smaller than 35. That’s what Dr. Oz said and I’m sticking to it,” said Tiegs.
Tiegs was the first model ever to be cast on a cover of Sports Illustrated twice.
Tiegs went on to say that though Graham’s face was “beautiful” she doesn’t think that her body is “healthy in the long run.
Graham has said that her cover is a victory for “Every women who felt like she wasn’t beautiful enough because of her size.”
