Charlize Theron and Sean Penn, who’ve been dating since 2013, have reportedly called off their engagement.
After nearly a year and a half of dating, Theron, 39, and Penn, 54, have decided to part ways, reported Us Weekly. The couple apparently made the decision to split following their joint trip to the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France, where Theron was promoting Mad Max: Fury Road. Theron was apparently the one who wanted out of the relationship, according to Us.
Theron and Penn’s engagement went public in December 2014 following a trip they took to Paris. At that time, the two had been dating for roughly a year. Prior to their romance, the actors had enjoyed a long friendship.
Penn openly professed his love for Theron back in March, claiming that what they have together is far superior to what he had in his previous marriages to Madonna and Robin Wright, with whom he has children Dylan and Hopper Penn.
“You say I’ve been married twice before, but I’ve been married under circumstances where I was less informed than I am today,” Penn told Esquire UK. “So I wouldn’t even consider it a third marriage, I’d consider it a first marriage on its own terms if I got married again. I mean, I like the tradition. A friend of mine wrote a line, ‘Without tradition, new things die.’ And I don’t want new things to die.”
“53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you haven’t been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late,” Penn added. “But to run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer and – God! – a much happier feeling. It’s a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you’re a good person within it.”
Theron had echoed Penn’s sentiments when asked about the relationship, calling it “really good” in her own interview with Esquire.
“It’s really good, really nice. The marriage thing is always so strange to me anyway. I love the possibility of anything, but I’m really enjoying myself and the everyday moment and how that coincides with my son and my life and my friends. I’m a very, very, very lucky girl. Very lucky,” Theron said.
“[It’s like] when somebody walks into your life and makes you see something that you really never thought you’d be able to see,” the actress added. “If somebody had said to me, ‘This is what it will be,’ I would’ve said, ‘Fuck off.’ As you can see, it makes me smile.”
Thus far, neither Penn nor Theron have released a statement on the split.
