Charlie Murphy, the older brother of Eddie Murphy, has died after a long battle with leukemia. He was 57.
The comedian passed away Wednesday morning in a New York City hospital. He had been undergoing chemotherapy.
Murphy started as a writer on Chappelle’s Show with host Dave Chappelle. He also had a recurring segment on Comedy Central’s Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories, where he recreated embarrassing moments meeting celebs, including Prince and Rick James.
Charlie and Eddie teamed up on a few of Eddie’s movies, including Norbit. He also had recurring roles on Are We There Yet? and The Boondocks, and toured as a stand-up comic as well. He appeared in films like Jungle Fever, Night at the Museum and Lottery Ticket. His latest work was in Power on the Starz network.
Charlie’s wife Tisha Taylor Murphy died in 2009 after her own battle with cancer. They wed in 1997 and share two children together, Ava and Xavier. Eddie has a third child from a previous relationship.
“We just lose one of the funniest most real brothers of all time,” tweeted out Chris Rock when he heard of his passing. “With heavy [heart] & sadness sending love & prayers to #EddieMurphy & family,” said Kim Fields. “So sorry 4 the loss of @charliemurphy he gave us gr8 comedy gifts.”
“Rest In Peace to the legend that is Charlie Murphy, thank you for always bringing us joy and laughter,” said Zendaya. And Michael Strahan chimed in, “RIP Charlie Muprhy!”
