Mass murderer Charles Manson, 82, has been taken out of Corcoran State Prison, where he has been serving life in prison with the possibility of parole since 1971, and brought to a nearby hospital.
The reason for Manson’s hospital stay has been unconfirmed, but sources say he was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, California, earlier this week under the name “Joe Doe.” His illness is described as serious, though he is reportedly not in the intensive care unit.
Manson and his so-called family were found guilty of seven murders, including Sharon Tate, the 8,5 month pregnant wife of Roman Polanski. At the time of conviction in 1971, the members of the family were sentences to death. Their sentences were commuted to life sentences, however, when California abolished the death penalty. Prosecutors believed that Manson and his cohorts were attempting to start a race war.
Manson has reportedly been a troublesome inmate during his time behind bars, breaking hundreds of rules, according to prison officials. He has been denied parole 12 times, and his next hearing is set for 2027, when he will be 92.
